The abbess of the Metanoia monastery, 11th century. Seal (Lead, 19 mm, 5.44 g, 1 h). X/Є/Ρ/Є ("Greetings!") The Annunciation: the Virgin standing facing on the right, nimbate and raising her right hand with the palm turned outwards; on the left, the archangel Gabriel, nimbate, advancing towards the Virgin, raising his right hand and holding wand in his left. Rev. ΘKЄ RO... / HΓ૪MЄ... / T૪ MЄT.../OI... in four lines. Laurent V.1 1158 var. (legend). Schlumberger, Sigillographie p. 153 var. (same). An extremely rare seal of a Byzantine abbess. Somewhat rough, otherwise, good fine.
